Sudan. The history of an uprising
Les Rencontres photographiques d'Arles
Chapelle des Trinitaires, 32 Rue de la République

After three decades of religious and military dictatorship and years of civil war, on April 11, 2019 the Sudanese people toppled Omar Al-Bashir, who had imposed an undivided reign on them since his coup d'état in 1989.The Sudanese uprising began in December 2018. Despite the risk of arrest and torture by the regime's political police, thousands of Sudanese took to the streets for five months. Driven by the desire to document resistance and repression, a new generation of photographers between 19 and 30 years old emerged. Posting their images on social media, they were both actors and observers of this historical moment. The show features pictures by eight photographers on this emerging scene. They were taken from the revolutionaries’ point of view by young Sudanese who themselves participated in the uprising. Braving all dangers, they communicated its different stages on social media, from the first demonstrations against the regime to a huge democratic sit-in that stretched out over several square kilometers in Khartoum. To bring these 57 days of peaceful occupation to life, the show also includes footage of the sit-in shot by filmmaker Hind Meddeb.

About the curators :
DUHA MOHAMMED
Born 1993 in Omdurman, Sudan. Lives and works in Bahri, Sudan. Duha Mohammed first discovered her love for photography when she realized that she'd rather show you than tell you. Duha is an industrial designer who find solace in Visual Arts and thinks practicing it is a journey of life & self-exploration. She first got introduced to narrative and storytelling photography in 2014 when she participated in Mugran Foto Academy—a workshop organized by Goethe Institute Sudan— and she has been hooked ever since.
JULIETTE AGNEL
Born 1973, Paris, France. Lives and works in Paris. Juliette Agnel is unrivaled on the French photography scene. Using a global philosophical approach, she tasks herself with understanding the world. This investigation takes her from the skies, stirred by the connection between the universe and terrestrial forces, to the earth, through geobiology and the mystical experiences that the doors of nature open onto; today, her work takes her to the subterranean, exploring prehistoric caves. Agnel photographs the invisible, and through her work, tries to convey the register of feeling and interiority of her subject. There is no photographic truth in her images, the most concrete example of this is the calm that they emanate: they are time machines which carry a manifestly ecological footprint. The artist is represented by the Françoise Paviot gallery.
About the Rencontres photographiques d'Arles :
The Rencontres d'Arles is a summer photography festival founded in 1970, which has learned a world- wide reputation as a springboard for photographic and contemporary creative talents. Many of the most prestigious photographers have taken part in the Rencontres d’Arles, but the list of those who were “discovered” there is also impressive. The festival aims to stay abreast of changes in the photographic image and new processes and technologies, and to offer everyone a chance to get to know the world of photography. It is rich in diverse viewpoints thanks to the number and variety of photographers and curators from different backgrounds. Every year, the festival attempts to decipher a changing world, since photography is the medium that best tells the story.
